Haliwa-Saponi Pow Wow 2019, Holister, NC

The Haliwa-Saponi Pow Wow is the third largest pow wow in North Carolinia. A pow wow is a cultural event that tribal members from all over the US gather to celebrate their culture and family. The Haliwa-Saponi Pow Wow is an annual event held the third weekend in April. Food, dancing and singing are just some of the things that you see and experience. It is family friendly and all ages are welcome. It is a great experience for all who are willing to join us.

Dancers from various tribes compete in the outdoor arena to the beat of the honored drummers. The local favorite is Stony Creek Drummers; however, our host drummers this year were The Boyz from St. Paul, Minnesota. We continue to celebrate with Northeastern traditional dances.

This year the highlight was Brooke Simpson’s stunning performance. Brooke, a finalist on The Voice, is a member of our tribe. A member of our tribe also has art work displayed in the National Museum of the American Indian. We also honor out veterans who have served in the armed forces to protect our people and our nation. Here are some pictures I took while I was there:
